Boba Guys have one of the most aesthetically beautiful milk tea shops in the city. Here is a picture of the interiors I took from their website - it actually looks like this in person.
But we're not here to talk about store design, it's all about the boba.
I ordered my usual during my lunch break - Classic Black Milk Tea with boba, less ice and 25% sweetness.
On my first sip, the first thing I noticed was the tea - I noticed it not because it was strong, but because it was different. It's hard to describe it in words, but I'll try my best. If the standard milk tea tea blend is the Highway 5, Boba Guys' black tea blend would be the 101. It's a refreshing artisanal change to the standard milk tea taste if you want to try something new, but I would not convert permanently. I would say the flavor of Boba Guys' tea, would be a craftsman loose leaf Breakfast blend.
I will get straight to the point on this one - not a fan of the boba. It's too sweet and a little bit on the hard side - does not have the nice Taiwanese QQ chew to it. However, since Boba Guys use organic tea and organic milk, I'm pretty confident that they also use plasticizer-free boba balls.
Overall, I would come here again, but it won't be my staple or holy grail milk tea shop. If I were to visit Boba Guys again, I would be opened to trying new flavors, but definitely ordering the milk tea neutered - no balls.
As a thank you for being a reader, I am giving away a gift card to Boba Guys to one lucky winner!
TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words BOBA GUYS and tell me which milk tea shop I should visit next in the Fidi, Downtown and Chinatown area.
You can get soy milk tea at Boba guys and try their almond jelly instead! I go to Cool Tea Bar when I work near Chinatown :)
ReplyDeleteBOBA GUYS is okay - I prefer to go to SharedTea. They plan on opening a new location at the Metreon - you should review it when it opens!
ReplyDeleteBtw, I think Boba Guys' boba is actually pretty good, since I like the sweeter ones.

I can't believe you actually risked it and waited two hours just to see if they used real milk. You could have just asked. I don't know any Boba places in your area. But there's a Boba place an hour away from me that is lactose-free, which is pretty good. But it doesn't taste as good, though. http://www.yelp.com/biz/green-forest-cafe-ventura
ReplyDeleteI like your blog. Keep it up!
Thank you for your kind words.
DeleteBoba guys' balls are unexpectedly chewy. I like Purple Kow balls better. I just realized I visited three boba places over the past three days. I think this is Wendy's influence. I vote new Sharetea when it opens!
ReplyDeleteNever been to Boba Guys, thanks for the review. Have you tried the boba at 85 degrees? You should give their boba a review
