Boba Blog - Little Sweet - Geary & 2nd

I'm going to be honest, the only reasons why I ended up at Little Sweet was because I was waiting for my pizza next door at Nizarios and I saw a sign for 20% off all drinks.

A couple years ago, I started noticing a change in my preference for sugar. I remember a time when I ate sugar straight from the package. Nowadays, I find most desserts and drinks way too sweet for my taste, so I'm extra careful when ordering anything with sugar in it.

Not knowing if the name of the boba shop would reflect the sweetness of their drinks, I had to confirm the how sweet was "100% sweet". The cashier assured me that their drinks were mildly sweet and quite healthy. As the line slowly piled up behind me, I quickly ordered the Roasted Milk Tea, 50% sugar, with boba and red bean.

The tea was a black tea with a very distinct smoky aroma...not like second-hand cigarette smoky or Sunday afternoons at Dolores smoky, but like Yosemite campfire smoky. Roast Milk Tea was an excellent choice as a dinner time boba drink.

I couldn't see what Little Sweet used for their milk/cream, but I can say that it was lactose-intolerant friendly. It wasn't as creamy as I'd like and as the ice melted, it started to look like skim-milk and tea.

The boba is what I had an issue with. The cashier was right - at 50% sweetness, the milk tea was fine. What she forgot to tell me was that the boba was drenched in sugary syrup. The texture and chew was good, but the boba was so sweet, it made the entire thing undrinkable. This is how far I got before I was self-diagnosed with early on-set diabetes.

As an adult, I don't think I will order from Little Sweet anytime soon. But if I find myself as a young college student again and enrolled in USF, I would definitely be a regular. With operating hours from 1:00pm to 2:00am, wifi and perfect window seats for studying/people watching, there is no reason to not be at Little Sweet.

  1. Maybe you can ask them to rinse off the boba first. Btw, did they have almond milk tea?
